Move-In Day is here at Southern Miss. For hundreds of freshmen, that means unloading cars, carrying boxes into dorms and getting their first real taste of life as a college student in Hattiesburg.
Among the newest Golden Eagles moving in this week is a name some people might recognize. Maddie Watson, the daughter of actress and singer Jamie Lynn Spears, has arrived at Southern Miss to begin her freshman year, as an outfielder for the Softball team.

Watson comes to Southern Miss from Oak Forest Academy in Amite, Louisiana, where she developed into a Division I softball prospect.
The outfielder signed with Southern Miss as part of the Golden Eagles’ 2026 recruiting class after hitting .322 with a .425 on-base percentage. She finished with 22 hits, 16 RBIs and 22 runs scored while stealing 16 bases. Speed was a big part of Watson’s game in high school, and Southern Miss sees her as another option in the outfield as she begins her college career.
For Watson, Hattiesburg isn’t a huge move geographically. Oak Forest Academy sits less than two hours away, giving her the chance to play Division I softball while remaining relatively close to her Louisiana home.
Of course, Watson arrives at Southern Miss with more attention than the typical freshman softball player. Her mom, Jamie Lynn Spears, became a household name as the star of Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101. Watson is also the niece of pop star Britney Spears.
That connection will inevitably bring some additional attention when softball season begins. But Watson has spent years building an athletic career of her own. She played multiple sports growing up before developing into a college softball recruit, eventually signing with head coach Natalie Poole and Southern Miss.
When Southern Miss announced its signing class, Poole pointed to Watson as one of the newcomers capable of helping the Golden Eagles in the outfield.
That’s ultimately what matters once the season starts. Not who her mom is. Not who her aunt is. Watson also arrives in Hattiesburg with plans that extend beyond the softball field. She plans to study health sciences and has talked publicly about eventually wanting to become a pediatrician.
It’s a career choice with some personal history behind it. Watson survived a serious ATV accident as a child in 2017 after the vehicle entered a pond on her family’s property in Louisiana. She was hospitalized before eventually making a full recovery.
Jamie Lynn Spears has shared pieces of the move-in experience publicly as her oldest daughter begins college, but pretty soon the attention turns away from Move-In Day and toward softball. There will be fall workouts, practices and plenty of competition before Watson ever steps onto the field for a college game.
That’s the part of the story Southern Miss fans will get to watch unfold. Maddie Watson may arrive in Hattiesburg with a last name and family that people already know.
Now she gets the chance to give Southern Miss fans a reason to know her name for something of her own.
