As the Barclays Center in Brooklyn hosts the 2025 NBA Draft tonight and Duke’s Cooper Flagg expected to go number 1 to the Mavericks. Mississippi basketball fans will be tuning in —even if a selection from the Magnolia State isn’t expected. While this year lacks a surefire lottery pick from Mississippi’s college ranks, several former SEC and Sun Belt stars have earned pre-draft buzz and could find their way into the NBA through late-round selections or Summer League invites.
Mississippi State: Josh Hubbard Opts for Another Year in Starkville

The biggest name in the state this draft cycle is Josh Hubbard, the electric 5-foot-10 guard from Mississippi State. After leading the Bulldogs in scoring during the 2024–25 season and showcasing his elite shot-making at the SEC Tournament, Hubbard flirted with the idea of entering the draft. However, the All-SEC sophomore ultimately withdrew his name, electing to return to Starkville for another year under coach Chris Jans.
Scouts were intrigued by Hubbard’s deep shooting range, high motor, and clutch scoring ability. However, concerns over his size and defensive ceiling likely impacted his draft grade. His return makes Mississippi State a serious threat in the SEC next season—and keeps his NBA future very much alive for 2026.
Ole Miss: Jaemyn Brakefield a Long Shot, Matthew Murrell Eyes Pro Path
Jaemyn Brakefield (below), a senior forward and former Duke transfer, had an up-and-down career at Ole Miss. While his size and face-up game at 6-foot-8 made him a matchup problem in stretches, his lack of consistency and perimeter defense kept him off most major draft boards. Brakefield worked out for multiple G League teams and could be a candidate for a two-way or Exhibit 10 deal.

Meanwhile, Matthew Murrell (below), Ole Miss’s leading scorer for much of the 2023–24 and 2024–25 campaigns, continues to explore pro opportunities. The 6-foot-4 combo guard entered the draft process without much fanfare but impressed in certain pre-draft scrimmages with his physicality and shot-making. He’s projected as a fringe second-rounder or priority undrafted free agent.

Southern Miss: Andre Curbelo and Neftali Alvarez already establishing solid pro careers in Puerto Rico
Southern Miss may not be expected to have any players drafte tonight, but one of its most recognizable recent stars, André Curbelo, has already begun his professional journey. After transferring from Illinois to St. John’s and eventually Southern Miss, Curbelo closed out his controversial college career as a highlight-reel passer with unmatched flair and creativity.

Now suiting up professionally in his native Puerto Rico, Curbelo has become a fan favorite for Atleticos de San German in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) league. While not currently on the NBA radar, Curbelo’s court vision and ball-handling make him a long-shot candidate for Summer League invites or a future G League look. Another popular former Golden Eagle is tearing up the hardwood with Curbelo in Puerto Rico. Neftali Alvarez gained attention for his performances in international showcases and Puerto Rico’s pro league. The seasoned floor general, known for his tenacity and veteran leadership, is expected to pursue a professional career overseas. While not in the NBA mix, Alvarez’s path reflects the increasing diversity of pro routes for Mississippi-grown players.

Other Mississippi Standouts
Alijah Martin (Florida) Summit, MS

Martin made waves at Florida and Florida Atlantic playing in two Final Fours, but hasn’t generated significant draft buzz—his NCAA title and SEC conference accolades matter more for a potential Summer League or overseas path.
