Happy 39th Birthday to one of the greatest players in Southern Miss football history, Damion Fletcher.
Few players have left a bigger mark on the Golden Eagle record book than the Biloxi native. From the moment he stepped onto the field in 2006, Fletcher became the centerpiece of the Southern Miss offense, combining blazing speed, patience, and the ability to break a long run from anywhere on the field.
Over four remarkable seasons in Hattiesburg, Fletcher rushed for 5,302 career yards and 44 touchdowns, numbers that still rank as the most in Southern Miss history. He also became just the ninth player in NCAA FBS history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in each of his four collegiate seasons, a feat that speaks to both his consistency and durability.
His breakout freshman season immediately announced his arrival, and by the time his career ended in 2009, Fletcher had established himself alongside the greatest running backs ever to wear the black and gold. Whether it was slicing through Conference USA defenses, breaking tackles in the open field, or delivering in big rivalry games, No. 22 gave Southern Miss fans countless unforgettable moments.

Fletcher’s accomplishments extended far beyond Hattiesburg. In 2007, he captured the Conerly Trophy, awarded annually to Mississippi’s top college football player. He earned multiple All-Conference USA honors during his career and was later inducted into the Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the premier athletes in school history.
Nearly two decades after his debut, Fletcher remains the standard by which Southern Miss running backs are measured. His name still sits atop the program’s career rushing list, and his combination of production, consistency, and excitement made him one of the most electrifying players of the Golden Eagles’ modern era.
Today, Magnolia Coast Sports joins Golden Eagle fans everywhere in wishing Damion Fletcher a very Happy Birthday. Thank you for the memories, the record-breaking performances, and for giving Southern Miss one of the greatest careers the program has ever witnessed.
Happy Birthday, Damion Fletcher! 🦅
