
A chapter of Southern Miss Athletic History closed this past Tuesday. As Joye Lee-McNelis, the indomitable head coach of the Southern Miss Lady Eagles, announced her retirement after the Golden Eagles 70-59 opening round loss to Georgia Southern in Pensacola. Ending a 21-year career as coach for the Lady Eagles marked by resilience, dedication, and an unwavering passion for basketball.
From her early days as a standout player at Southern Miss, where she finished her career with the second-most points in school history, to her return as head coach in 2004, to her multiple battles with cancer Lee-McNelis has been a beacon of inspiration. Her coaching career, spanning over four decades, has been about more than just the Xs and Os of basketball.
Under her leadership, the Lady Eagles achieved significant milestones, including a share of the Sun Belt regular-season championship and five WNIT appearances. Her most successful season came in 2013-14 when Southern Miss won 27 games, earning her the Conference USA Coach of the Year award1. Despite battling stage 4 lung cancer multiple times, Lee-McNelis continued to lead her team with courage and determination, earning the Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award in 2024.
As she steps into the next chapter of her life, Joye Lee-McNelis leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and unwavering passion. Her story is a reminder that true success is measured not just by achievements but by the positive impact one has on others. Southern Miss and the world of women’s basketball will forever be grateful for her contributions. In 2024 Southern Miss hung a banner for Lee-McNelis in the rafters of the Reed Green Coliseum. Making sure her memory will forever be remembered by Southern Miss fans.
