Tucked away in southeastern Mississippi, just off Interstate 59, halfway between Hattiesburg and New Orleans. Lies the charming town of Poplarville, the blueberry capital of Mississippi. At first glance, it’s a quiet county seat with pine-lined streets, a historic courthouse, and a population that hovers just above 3,000. But come Thursday nights during football season, the town roars to life as home of the Pearl River Community College Wildcats, a program steeped in tradition and pride having won two NJCAA National Championships.
This first stop on our JUCO Road Trip series shows exactly why Poplarville is more than just a football town—it’s a living, breathing slice of Mississippi small-town culture.

Poplarville has deep roots in agriculture and timber, and the town’s name itself comes from the poplar trees that once shaded its early settlements. Over time, farming became the backbone of the community, and today Poplarville proudly carries the title of the “Blueberry Capital of Mississippi.” Every June, the town hosts the Blueberry Jubilee, a celebration of its farming heritage that draws over 10,000 visitors for live entertainment, parades, arts and crafts, and endless blueberry-inspired dishes. It’s the kind of festival that transforms Poplarville from a sleepy county seat into a bustling center of culture and commerce, if only for a weekend, and it underscores just how important agriculture remains to this part of Mississippi.

At the heart of town sits Pearl River Community College, Mississippi’s oldest two-year institution, founded in 1909. The campus itself is a point of pride, with historic buildings framed by Greek columns that give the school a distinctly Southern feel. The football program, one of the most storied in the junior college ranks, has long been a rallying point for the community. Multiple NJCAA national championships, dozens of professional players, and a reputation for toughness on the gridiron have solidified PRCC as one of the premier JUCO programs in the country. For many athletes, Poplarville is the launching pad to bigger stages, but for locals, the Wildcats are as big as it gets.

Outside of football, Poplarville offers visitors a handful of attractions that showcase its small-town charm. Downtown Poplarville centers around the courthouse square, where boutique shops, antique stores, and family-owned businesses create a nostalgic, walkable feel. Hall’s Service Station, with its restored vintage pumps and signage, is more than just a gas stop—it’s a living reminder of Poplarville’s past, a place that feels frozen in time and connects visitors to the town’s roots.

Just a short walk away, the Pearl River Drug Store stands as a community staple. It’s not only where locals pick up prescriptions, but also where they gather at the old-fashioned soda fountain for milkshakes, burgers, and conversation. Together, these landmarks capture the essence of downtown Poplarville—a blend of history, tradition, and everyday life that makes the town memorable. Seasonal visitors can enjoy U-pick blueberry farms and farm stands that dot the landscape in the summer months, offering fresh fruit, homemade jams, and pies straight from the source.

No JUCO Road Trip is complete without a sampling of the local food scene, and while Poplarville is small, it offers some memorable stops. Deb’s Pizza & Pasta House is a beloved institution, serving hearty Italian fare that makes it a go-to for Wildcats fans after a game. While Main Street Cafe in Downtown provides the perfect early morning stop for coffee. Just outside of town, Sticky Sauce BBQ delivers smoked ribs, brisket, and sausage that rivals bigger-city barbecue joints.
Poplarville may be small, but it embodies the spirit of Small Town Mississippi better than anywhere. Here, the community college is inseparable from the identity of the town, and the pride locals have for their Wildcats is matched only by their pride in their heritage and traditions. From the annual Blueberry Jubilee to Thursday Night lights at Dobie Holden Stadium, Poplarville offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the blend of sport, culture, and community that makes JUCO football in Mississippi so special. As the first stop on our JUCO Road Trip series, Poplarville proves that in small towns, big memories are made.
