The Mississippi State family is mourning the loss of one of its own this week, as former Bulldogs pitcher Caleb Reed passed away at the age of 35 following a sudden and aggressive illness he was diagnosed with in May. A pillar of Mississippi State Baseball during a key turning point in the program’s resurgence, Reed leaves behind not only an impressive legacy on the mound, but also a lasting impact on teammates, coaches, and the greater Starkville community.
Reed arrived in Starkville in 2009 by way of Benton Academy. Over the course of four seasons, he carved out a reputation as one of the most reliable closers in SEC baseball. Reed appeared in 96 games in his career, logging 207 innings and striking out 177 batters while walking just 84.
Reed’s breakout year came in 2011, when he posted a sterling 1.55 ERA and was named to the All-SEC Second Team. He recorded 12 saves that season and was instrumental in guiding the Bulldogs to a Super Regional appearance—MSU’s first since 2007.
He followed up that effort with another stellar campaign in 2012, logging 9 more saves and helping Mississippi State claim the SEC Tournament Championship.
A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection, he took pride in balancing the demands of the classroom with those of the diamond. He was also recognized on the SEC Baseball Community Service Team for his commitment to outreach work, including volunteering at local schools, food drives, and the M-Club’s reading programs.
A Fighter Until the End
In late May of 2025, Reed was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia/lymphoma. The news shocked many in the Mississippi State community, but Reed approached his diagnosis with the same toughness and resolve he once brought to the mound. Friends and family rallied behind him in those final weeks. Sadly, he passed away on July 2, surrounded by his loved ones. He leaves behind his wife, Robin, and their three children.
Mississippi State Baseball released a statement that read:
“We’re saddened by the passing of former All‑SEC reliever Caleb Reed. Caleb was an integral part of our 2011 Super Regional squad and the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship team. Our condolences to his family, friends, and teammates.”
Former teammates, coaches, and fans flooded social media with tributes, sharing stories of Caleb’s sportsmanship, humility, and integrity.

A Bulldog Forever
In a program that has produced countless Major Leaguers and SEC legends, Caleb Reed’s legacy endures not through trophies or professional accolades, but through character. He represented Mississippi State with pride and heart—on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. His impact extended far beyond the ninth inning.
As Starkville grieves and remembers, one thing is clear: Caleb Reed was more than a pitcher. He was a teammate, a mentor, a father, and a Bulldog in every sense of the word.
