In central Mississippi, about halfway between Jackson and Starkville, sits the town of Kosciusko. Home to one of the most unique and enduring mascots in the Magnolia State — Kosciusko Whippets.
The origin of the Whippets mascot dates back to the early decades of the 20th century, when Kosciusko’s athletic teams — especially in football and track — built a reputation for being fast.
According to local lore and early newspaper accounts, Kosciusko players were described as “quick as whippets,” a nod to the whippet dog breed — a smaller relative of the greyhound, known for its lightning-fast speed and sleek build. The comparison caught on, and before long, “Whippets” became the unofficial nickname for the school’s teams.

By the 1930s, the name had stuck for good. It appeared in school yearbooks, on jerseys, and in The Kosciusko Star-Herald, where sportswriters would regularly refer to the teams as “the fleet-footed Whippets.” The name perfectly reflected what Kosciusko stood for: not overwhelming size, but speed, precision, and heart.
Kosciusko High School’s teams have long embodied the Whippet’s qualities — small but relentless, never backing down from a challenge. The Whippet logo, a running dog in full stride, it represents discipline, speed, and loyalty, the same values that coaches have instilled in Kosciusko athletes for generations.
What makes the Kosciusko Whippet mascot so special is its authenticity. It wasn’t chosen to sound intimidating or modern — it evolved naturally from the way people described their athletes and town: quick, graceful, and determined.
Nearly a century later, that identity still drives Kosciusko High School. Whether it’s on the football field, the basketball court, or the softball diamond, every player wearing maroon and white carries the same message — play fast, play proud, and play for Kosciusko.
Because in a world full of Lions, Tigers, and Bulldogs, there’s only one Whippet.
