
The Mississippi Mud Monsters made history on Thursday night, securing their first-ever victory in franchise history with a dominant 13-2 win over the Florence Y’alls at Trustmark Park.
4,552 fans packed Trustmark Park to witness the Mud Monsters’ inaugural game, marking the beginning of a new era for baseball in Mississippi. The excitement was palpable as Vicksburg native and Super Bowl-winning defensive back Malcolm Butler threw out the ceremonial first pitch, officially kicking off the team’s journey in the Frontier League.
The Mud Monsters have been working tirelessly to build a competitive roster and create a fan-friendly experience. The ballpark was redecorated in the team’s signature black and teal colors, replacing the Mississippi Braves’ previous blue and red motif. A new mascot named “Fish” roamed the concourses, entertaining fans and adding to the festive atmosphere.
The Mud Monsters wasted no time making an impact. Australian pitcher James Boeree, standing at an astonishing 7-foot-2, took the mound and delivered a clean first inning. The team’s offense quickly followed suit, with former Mississippi State Center Fielder Brayland Skinner scoring the first run in franchise history after an errant throw to first base.
Florence briefly tied the game 1-1 in the second inning, but the Mud Monsters responded with a two-run fourth inning to regain the lead. The real fireworks came later, as Mississippi exploded offensively before the seventh inning, extending their lead to nine runs. The Y’alls managed to add a run in the eighth, but the Mud Monsters answered back with three more, sealing their 11-run victory.
The Mud Monsters ensured their first win was a memorable one, capping off the night with a fireworks show to celebrate their historic achievement. Fans were treated to giveaways, including Mud Monsters T-shirts and magnet schedules, as part of the team’s effort to create a fan-friendly experience

With their first win in the books, the Mud Monsters are set to continue their inaugural homestand against Florence on Friday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.. Friday’s game is City of Flowood Community Night and the first 1,000 fans will receive a Mud Monsters magnetic schedule. The team hopes to build on their momentum and establish themselves as a force in the Frontier League.
Saturday’s game will feature Pickleball Palooza, where the first 1,000 fans will receive a Mud Monsters pickleball paddle, and pickleball courts will be set up on the left field concourse for fans to play before the game.
After the series with Florence, the Mud Monsters will take a brief break before facing the Gateway Grizzlies on May 13, followed by a three-game series against the Evansville Otters from May 16-18.
