While the world turns its eyes to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, the real race of the weekend might just be happening on four much shorter legs. The third annual Starkville Derby returns to the Cotton District on Saturday, bringing back the state’s most beloved blend of small dogs, big crowds, and even bigger heart.
Dubbed the “Kentucky Derby of Weenie Dogs,” this fast-growing community festival features over 200 dachshunds from across the country competing in a daylong series of races, contests, and canine-themed celebrations — all in support of the Oktibbeha County Humane Society.

(The playing of the trumpet symbolizes the start of the race.)
The races, divided by age group, take place on a turf track laid out in from Bin 612 in the heart of the Cotton District. Spectators can expect lightning-quick sprints, hilarious false starts, and photo-finishes as pups bound toward their owners, often in costumes or complete chaos.
“This is the Kentucky Derby for dog lovers,” says event organizer Sarah Blasingame. “And the best part is, every dollar raised goes toward finding forever homes for animals right here in Oktibbeha County.”
Beyond the track, the festival transforms the Cotton District into a vibrant celebration. This year’s theme, “Grateful Weenies,” celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead with tie-dye merch, live music, and more than 100 craft and food vendors.  In just three years, the Starkville Derby has become one of Mississippi’s premier spring festivals. Last year’s event drew over 5,000 attendees and raised tens of thousands of dollars for local animal welfare efforts.

Whether you’re a Starkville native, a Mississippi State student, or a curious out-of-towner. Saturday’s derby promises good vibes, goofy dogs, and a cause worth supporting.
So, throw on your best sunhat, and head to the Cotton District. Because in Starkville this weekend, the race that matters most isn’t in Kentucky — it’s right here in the Cotton District.
