In a landmark event for Mississippi high school athletics, St. Martin High School’s Yellow Jackets clinched the state’s first-ever girls’ flag football state championship, defeating George County 18-0 on Saturday, May 10. This victory marks the culmination of the inaugural season for girls’ flag football in the state, a sport officially sanctioned by the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) earlier this year in partnership with the New Orleans Saints.

The 2025 season introduced girls’ flag football to Mississippi’s high school sports landscape, with 12 schools participating in the pilot program. Teams included St. Martin, George County, Brandon, East Central, McComb, Meridian, Oak Grove, Perry Central, Picayune, Richland, South Pike, and Vancleave. The initiative aimed to provide new athletic opportunities for female students and was met with enthusiasm across the state.
The championship game showcased St. Martin’s dominance on both offense and defense. Quarterback Jalyn Nguyen led the offense with precision, while Brianne Sanders contributed significantly, including a remarkable 50-yard touchdown run that sealed the victory. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets held George County scoreless, demonstrating their comprehensive strength on the field.
Yvette Nathan and Brianne Sanders were named Co-MVPs of the championship game, recognizing their outstanding performances and contributions to the team’s success.

Mississippi’s successful introduction of girls’ flag football reflects a growing national trend, with the sport gaining popularity and recognition. The MHSAA’s collaboration with the New Orleans Saints has set a precedent for expanding athletic opportunities for female students. As the sport continues to grow, more schools are expected to join, fostering a new era of inclusivity and competition in high school athletics.
The Yellow Jackets’ championship victory not only marks a significant milestone for St. Martin High School but also paves the way for future generations of female athletes in Mississippi.
