Before Omaha became a real possibility in Oxford, there was 2005 — the year Ole Miss baseball broke through to the national stage. Under fifth-year head coach Mike Bianco, the Rebels posted a 48–20 record, won the SEC West, and hosted both a regional and super regional at a packed-out Swayze Field. Though their season ended one win shy of the College World Series, this group helped redefine the culture of Ole Miss baseball.
Mike Bianco’s 2005 Ole Miss squad might not have made it to Omaha, but they came heartbreakingly close — and set the modern foundation for Ole Miss baseball’s rise as a national power. Finishing with a 40 win season earned the Rebels a national seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Swayze Field was the place to be in Oxford, buzzing with energy from record crowds and the now-iconic beer showers that began to take hold as a signature fan tradition.
Led by All-American pitcher Mark Holliman, clutch-hitting infielder Chris Coghlan, and the SEC’s Player of the Year Stephen Head, Ole Miss tore through the regular season with big series wins over LSU, Mississippi State, and Florida. The Rebels dominated the Oxford Regional, defeating Oklahoma twice, including 20-3 to win the Regional and beating a Maine team. That set the stage for a classic Super Regional showdown against Texas.

(All-American two way player Stephen Head played first base and pitched for the Rebels in 2005, and won the first ever Farris Trophy, given to the best baseball player in Mississippi)
Despite the home-field advantage and a sold-out Swayze, the Rebels fell in three games to a Longhorns team that would go on to win the national title. Game 2 was a defining moment — a 6–4 Ole Miss win that sent the crowd into a frenzy and gave Rebel fans a taste of what was just around the corner. Although Omaha eluded them, this team changed expectations in Oxford. The 2005 squad became the “almost” that inspired the eventual “finally” — paving the way for future postseason success.
While they fell one win short of Omaha, the 2005 Rebels left a lasting mark. It was the first time many fans truly believed that Ole Miss baseball could be more than just good — it could be elite. Chris Coghlan would later win NL Rookie of the Year in 2009. Mike Bianco’s tenure was already gaining traction, but this was the team that gave it legs — and gave Swayze its soul.

(Chris Coghlan would later win National League Rookie of the Year in 2009 with the Marlins.)
Key Players
P Mark Holliman — A steady weekend ace who went 10–3 with a 2.82 ERA. His command and poise set the tone on Friday nights.
1B/P Stephen Head — A two-way star and three-time All-American, Head led the team with 18 home runs while also serving as the team’s closer, tallying 8 saves. Head would later win the first C-Spire Farris Trophy, given annually to the best college baseball player in Mississippi.

INF Chris Coghlan — A sophomore who batted .346 with 8 home runs. He would later get drafted in the first round by the Marlins in 2006 and would go on to win NL Rookie of the Year in 2009 with the Marlins. He would enjoy a nine year career in the Big Leagues before retiring in 2017.
P Brian Pettway — The team’s top hitter in terms of power and production, batting .386 with 21 home runs and 67 RBI.
Notable Games & Moments:
- April 15–17, 2005 – at Mississippi State: The Rebels traveled to Starkville and took two of three from their in-state rivals at Dudy Noble Field, including a 6–1 Friday win behind Holliman. The series was a pivotal SEC West moment that gave Ole Miss breathing room in the standings.
- May 14–16, 2005 – vs. #6 Florida: Hosting one of the hottest teams in the country, Ole Miss made a statement by winning the series at home. A dramatic walk-off double from Stephen Head in Game 2 set the tone for the final weeks of the season.
- Oxford Regional Final – June 6, 2005: In front of a wild home crowd, the Rebels beat Oklahoma 20–5 in the regional championship game, with Coghlan and Pettway combining for 7 RBI.
- Oxford Super Regional vs. Texas – June 10–12, 2005:
One of the most iconic weekends in Ole Miss baseball history. The Rebels dropped Game 1, 6–4, then rallied to win Game 2 behind Head’s two-run homer and Holliman’s gutsy pitching. In Game 3, with Omaha on the line, Texas edged out a 3–1 win. Texas would go on to win the national championship, while Ole Miss was left one painful win short of their CWS debut.
The heartbreak of the 2005 Super Regional stung — but what remained was far more important: belief. That year, Ole Miss proved it belonged in the national conversation. The Rebels drew over 230,000 fans that season, establishing Swayze as one of college baseball’s premier atmospheres. The beer showers were born, the expectations changed, and Mike Bianco had built a machine.
The 2005 team didn’t go to Omaha — but they kicked the door open for those who eventually did.
