
Tulane Green Wave faced off against the New Orleans Privateers on Tuesday night, in the first game of this season’s Pelican Cup at Maestri Field. It was a thrilling contest with UNO narrowly defeating Tulane 7-6.
UNO took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding five more by the fourth, thanks to standout performances from Bryan Loriga, who hit two home runs and drove in four runs, and Bryce Calloway, who also homered. Tulane rallied in the fifth inning, with Gavin Schulz drawing a bases-loaded walk and Tanner Chun smashing a grand slam to bring the Green Wave within one run. Despite their efforts, Tulane couldn’t complete the comeback, as UNO’s closer, Bryce Calloway, secured the win with his sixth save of the season.
The game showcased strong pitching performances, including UNO’s Ira Austin, who delivered 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, and Tulane’s Wes Burton, who struck out seven batters in three shutout innings. The Privateers’ victory marked their ninth win against Tulane at Maestri Field since 2016.
The Green Wave drop to 17-8 on the season, while UNO increases their win to 13-10. The Green Wave are back in action this weekend travel to Tampa for an American Conference matchup with South Florida. While New Orleans faces another rivalry matchup with a three-game series at Maestri Field against Southeastern Louisiana in the Pontchartrain Bowl beginning Friday.
