Joye Lee‑McNelis, a Southern Miss icon whose name was synonymous with Lady Eagle basketball, passed away peacefully on Tuesday June 24, 2025, after a fierce battle with lung cancer. She was 63.
A native of Leetown, Mississippi, McNelis burst onto the college basketball scene at Southern Miss in 1980 as a standout guard. She concluded her playing career in 1984 as one of the school’s leading scorers—breaking the 1,000‑point threshold and leaving a mark in the program’s history.
After earning both her B.S. and M.S. from Southern Miss, she transitioned into coaching. She first returned to Hattiesburg as an assistant (1986–91), then ventured to Memphis, where, at just 28, she led the Tigers as head coach from 1991–2004. There, she compiled an impressive 229–156 record, securing four NCAA Tournament bids and multiple conference titles.
In 2004, McNelis answered the call to return to her alma mater, Southern Miss, as head coach—becoming only the fourth person to hold that position for the Lady Eagles. Over the next 21 seasons, she wove loyalty, resilience, and deep passion into the fabric of the program, guiding her teams through 339–308 games, eight WNIT appearances, and a revered 1,000+ game legacy spanning three roles.
Despite facing adversity—including four bouts with Stage 4 lung cancer beginning in 2017—McNelis refused to relent. She coached through her illness until announcing her retirement at the close of the 2024–25 season.

Her extraordinary determination earned her the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s 2024 Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award. In 2025, she was also named USA TODAY Mississippi’s Woman of the Year and inducted into the Memphis Sports Hall of Fame—fitting honors for her storied influence in both cities.
Joye’s world extended far beyond the hardwood. She built a life marked by love and devotion: a cherished wife of nearly three decades, a proud mother, and a doting grandmother. Her grounded faith and mentorship inspired players and colleagues alike.
As Hattiesburg mourns, it also celebrates the life of a leader who came home and elevated her community. Coach McNelis taught that true greatness is forged through adversity, loyalty, and love—for teammates, institution, family, and alma mater. Her bronze name will shine on for generations of Lady Eagles who follow in her footsteps.
