For the first time in two decades, the high-pitched whine of race-tuned engines will echo across Lake Pontchartrain this weekend, as the P1 Offshore New Orleans Grand Prix thunders into Jefferson Parish. Staged at the Bonnabel Boat Launch, this high-octane spectacle marks the long-awaited return of professional powerboat racing to the region — and for fans of speed and spray, it promises more than just big boats.
The event is headlined by P1 Offshore’s Triple Crown racing series, but also features the exhilarating P1 AquaX jet ski tour, a Pro Enduro competition showcasing some of the best personal watercraft racers in the world.
Lake Pontchartrain was once a vibrant part of the U.S. offshore racing circuit, hosting legendary races through the 1980s and ’90s. But it’s been over 20 years since the last major powerboat race graced these waters. The return of the sport is thanks to Powerboat P1’s expansion of their Triple Crown series and a local push to re-ignite the region’s love for lakefront motorsport.

The weekend festivities begin Friday evening with a free Pit Party from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Bonnabel Boat Launch. Fans will have an up-close chance to meet drivers, explore the boats and jet skis, and enjoy live music from Grammy-nominated Corey Ledet and his Zydeco Band.
Food trucks, cold drinks, and lakefront energy will set the tone for the weekend. It’s a family-friendly pre-race celebration combining motorsport, music, and Louisiana flavor — all beneath a lakeside sunset.

Backed by Harvey Gulf International Marine, the event also boosts local tourism and small business activity during a peak summer weekend.
Saturday is expected to be hot and humid with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, so attendees are encouraged to bring umbrellas, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Ear protection is also recommended — the Class 1 boats are thunderously loud.
