In the spring of 1969, the William Carey Crusaders etched their name into Mississippi sports history by capturing the NAIA National Championship, becoming the first college baseball team from the state to win a national title at any level.

Under the guidance of head coach John O’Keefe, the Crusaders compiled a 29–9 record, showcasing resilience and determination throughout the season. Their journey culminated at the NAIA World Series held at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph, Missouri.

William Carey opened the tournament with an 8–4 victory over Appalachian State, followed by a narrow 2–1 win against Glassboro State. They continued their momentum, defeating Grand Canyon 4–1 to advance to the championship game. In the final, the Crusaders faced La Verne College, securing a 5–3 victory to claim the national title.

The 1969 championship remains a cornerstone of William Carey’s athletic history. The team’s achievement was honored with induction into the William Carey Sports Hall of Fame in 2019, solidifying their status as legends within the university’s sports community.
This historic victory not only brought national recognition to William Carey University but also paved the way for future successes in the program. The 1969 Crusaders set a standard of excellence that continues to inspire generations of student-athletes.
