Season Overview
The 1990 Southern Miss Golden Eagles broke through one of college baseball’s toughest ceilings—earning the program’s first-ever NCAA Regional berth. Under longtime head coach Hill Denson, USM posted a 39–23 record and secured an at-large bid to the South I Regional hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge. It was uncharted territory for the Golden Eagles, who had hovered just outside the national conversation in previous years. But this squad finally delivered the postseason breakthrough that Hattiesburg had been waiting for.

Key Players & Draft Picks:
The roster featured a mix of homegrown talent and veteran leadership. Kevin Young, the team’s star slugger and future MLB infielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates, led the offense with his power bat and defensive versatility. Other key contributors included pitcher Damon Pollard who would set a school record in wins and starts at 21, a record that still stands today. The Golden Eagles would have five players get drafted after that season in the MLB Draft.

(First Baseman Kevin Young would later have a 12 year career in the Big Leagues with the Pirates and Royals (1992-2003). He had a lifetime .258 Batting Average with 144 Home Runs.
Postseason Performance
With the newly completed upgrades to Pete Taylor Park ahead of the season, Southern Miss earned the opportunity to host the conference tournament that year. On the bubble for a regional berth, the Golden Eagles strengthened their case with key victories over Louisville and Memphis. Their run came to an end in the semifinals with an 8–1 loss to Florida State, but the performance helped solidify their postseason resume.
Southern Miss’ debut at the 1990 NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge got off to a rough start, as they were handed a 23–5 loss by Southern Cal. However, the Golden Eagles bounced back in game two, storming from behind to win a wild 14–10 slugfest over Louisiana-Lafayette—the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament victory. Their historic run came to a close the following day, as Houston eliminated the Eagles with a 15–3 defeat.
Hill Denson was named Metro Conference Coach of the Year for his leadership during the 1990 season. On the field, pitcher Damon Pollard earned First-Team All-Metro honors for his standout performance on the mound. Several key contributors—second baseman Scotty Jurich, third baseman Kevin Young, catcher Doug Benefiel, and designated hitter Chris Robbins—were recognized with Second-Team All-Metro selections. Kevin Young, who played just one season at Southern Miss, also received ABCA All-American honors, solidifying his impact as one of the most talented players in program history.
Cultural Impact & Legacy
This team opened the door for every USM squad that followed. Before 1990, postseason dreams felt distant. After this season, they felt expected. The ’90 team lit a fire that would later produce stars like Brian Dozier, Nick Sandlin, and Matt Wallner. Their success energized the fanbase, elevated the program’s status in the South, and proved that Southern Miss baseball belonged on the national stage.
They may not have gone to Omaha, but they went somewhere no Golden Eagle team had gone before—a Regional. That step forward altered the identity of Southern Miss baseball forever. For breaking barriers, elevating the program, and launching a new era, the 1990 Golden Eagles earn the No. 20 spot on our countdown of Top 20 All-Time Mississippi College Baseball Teams.
