This week, I’m counting down the Top 25 all-time Mississippi high school football programs from 1990 to present, ranked by state championships and playoff appearances. Results prior to 1990 are not included.
25) Horn Lake Eagles
State championships (’90–present): 1 — 2018 (6A).
Playoff appearances (’90-present): 8.
Horn Lake’s 2018 title run was one of the great single-season peaks of the modern era, powered by a dominant defense. Since then they’ve cycled, but that gold ball still anchors their résumé.
24) Grenada Chargers
State championships: 1 — 2024 (6A).
Playoff appearances: 21.
Grenada’s recent surge culminated with the 2024 state title after a semifinal win at Warren Central and a decisive championship victory. The Chargers’ overall playoff footprint is growing fast.
23) Poplarville Hornets
State championships: 1 — 2024 (4A).
Playoff appearances: 23.
Long solid in late November, Poplarville broke through for its first MHSAA title in 2024 and has been a frequent finalist/semifinalist in 4A the last decade. The Hornets’ consistency finally paid off.
22) Brandon Bulldogs
State championships: 0 (multiple finals, incl. 2021–22, 2024 in 6A/7A).
Playoff appearances: 28.
Brandon is the “always there” big-class power — deep runs and recent championship-game trips under multiple staffs. The Bulldogs’ October–December consistency keeps them in the statewide top tier.
21) Pearl Pirates
State championships: 1 — 2017 (6A).
Playoff appearances: 28.
Pearl’s 2017 title team was one of the most balanced in recent 6A memory. The Pirates have stacked steady playoff bids across the 2000s and 2010s to anchor their résumé.
20) Laurel Golden Tornadoes
State championships: 3 (notably 2014 in 5A).
Playoff appearances: 28.
Laurel has been a factor across classifications, highlighted by its 2014 title and frequent deep 4A/5A runs. A tough playoff out with staying power.
19) Amory Panthers
State championships: 3 (1994) (1998) (1999)
Playoff appearances: 36.
Amory’s 90s run stamped the program’s brand statewide; they’ve remained a consistent playoff presence since. The Panthers’ historical floor is high.
18) Warren Central Vikings
State championships: 1 (1994)
Playoff appearances: 38.
WC is the model of longevity — near-annual playoff trips and frequent second-week games in Mississippi’s largest classes. The Vikings’ 2024 run reached the 7A semis.
17) Oxford Chargers
State championships: 1 — 2019 (6A).
Playoff appearances: 29.
Oxford’s 2019 championship validated a decade of deep runs and title-game experience. The Chargers continue to play November football in the largest classes.
16) Meridian Wildcats
State championships: 2 — 1990, 2008 (5A).
Playoff appearances: 32.
An old-line powerhouse with explosive peaks, Meridian’s bookend titles (1990, 2008) frame a program that’s nearly always in the bracket — and dangerous when it gets there.
15) Clarksdale Wildcats
State championships: 3 in late 1990s/early 2000s (5A/4A).
Playoff appearances: 34.
Clarksdale’s late-90s spike produced multiple gold balls and set a standard. Even outside title years, the Cats are a consistent, physical playoff team.
14) Tupelo Golden Wave
State championships: 2 — 1992 (5A), 2024 (7A).
Playoff appearances: 35.
From the 1992 title to an undefeated 2024 run in the new 7A, Tupelo’s ceiling is as high as any. Recent seasons show a sustained climb in the state’s largest class.
13) Scott Central Rebels
State championships: 4 (2018) (2019) (2021) (2022) (2A)
Playoff appearances: 31.
Few small-school programs have matched Scott Central’s recent dominance — a machine of efficient offense and suffocating defense. The Rebels’ November record is elite.
12) Jefferson Davis County Jaguars
State championships: 3 (2017) (2019) (2021)
Playoff appearances: 8 (as JDC; school opened in 2017).
Formed from Bassfield & Prentiss, JDC hit the ground sprinting with three titles in its first five seasons — rare air for a new program.
11) Taylorsville Tartars
State championships: 8 since 1990 across 2A (incl. 2017, 2020)
Playoff appearances: 35.
A small-school blueblood, Taylorsville stacks double-digit wins and late-round trips like clockwork. The Tartars’ trophy case stretches across three decades.
10) Wayne County War Eagles
State championships: 4 (4A/5A).
Playoff appearances: 24.
Wayne County has paired physical fronts with skill depth, translating to repeated semifinal and title-game appearances during the 2000s–2010s.
9) Moss Point Tigers
State championships: 4 (5A).
Playoff appearances: 35.
The Tigers’ 90s dynasty helped define big-class football on the Coast. Even in reload years, Moss Point has remained a postseason constant.
8) Oak Grove Warriors
State championships: 3 — 2013 (6A), 2020 (6A), 2023 (7A).
Playoff appearances: 20.
OG is built for the biggest stages — routinely winning the West and getting to Jackson/Hattiesburg. The 7A crown in 2023 underscores the program’s staying power.
7) Picayune Maroon Tide
State championships: 4 — 2011, 2013, 2021, 2022 (5A).
Playoff appearances: 36.
Picayune marries a punishing run game with line play that travels. Back-to-back 5A titles (’21–’22) cemented a modern-era run of excellence.
6) Noxubee County Tigers
State championships: 5 — 2008, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 (4A).
Playoff appearances: 27.
Noxubee is synonymous with November — fast, physical defenses and explosive playmakers. The Tigers’ five titles since 2008 speak for themselves.
5) Madison Central Jaguars
State championships: 2 — 1999, 2021.
Playoff appearances: 30.
MC has been a perennial big-class factor since opening in 1991, with a sky-high win percentage and frequent trips to Thanksgiving weekend.
4) Starkville Yellow Jackets
State championships: 6 — 1994, 1999, 2001, 2012, 2015, 2022.
Playoff appearances: 35.
From the Prosser era to recent 7A/6A runs, Starkville’s hardware plus constant semifinals make the Jackets one of the state’s surest bets most seasons.
3) Louisville Wildcats
State championships: 10 (heavy concentration 1990s–2020s across 3A/4A).
Playoff appearances: 35.
Louisville is Mississippi’s small/medium-class metronome — defense, discipline, and December games for three decades. The Wildcats’ title count since 1990 is elite.
2) West Point Green Wave
State championships: 7 — 1990, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2019 (5A).
Playoff appearances: 32.
If there’s a defining brand of November football in Mississippi, it’s West Point’s physical DNA and gold-ball results — especially the 2016–19 run.
1) South Panola Tigers
State championships: 8 — 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014 (5A/6A).
Playoff appearances: 35.
The standard. SP’s five-straight titles (’03–’07) plus three more in the 2010s define the modern big-class era. The Tigers’ postseason presence is almost automatic.
