What Omaha is to the College World Series, Gulf Shores, Alabama has become to NCAA beach volleyball—a sun-soaked sanctuary where champions are crowned and legacies forged. Since the NCAA inaugurated its women’s beach volleyball championship in 2016, Gulf Shores has been the heart of the sport, hosting every title match except one. Now, with the 2025 championship returning unexpectedly to its sandy shores, Gulf Shores further cements its status as the sport’s spiritual home.
The NCAA Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship debuted in Gulf Shores in 2016, with USC claiming the inaugural Title.  Since then, the city has hosted all but one championship, becoming synonymous with collegiate beach volleyball. USC has dominated the tournament, securing six national titles, including the most recent in 2024.Â

The 2025 championship was initially slated for Huntington Beach, California. However, due to the impact of Southern California wildfires, the event was relocated back to Gulf Shores—a testament to the city’s readiness and commitment to the sport .
Gulf Shores’ Gulf Place Public Beach, right out in front of The Hangout, transforms into a premier volleyball venue each May, featuring five competition courts and five practice courts set against the backdrop of the beautiful waters of the Gulf of America. The city’s infrastructure and community support have been pivotal in providing a top-tier experience for athletes and fans alike.
The 2025 championship, scheduled for May 2–4, will continue this tradition, with matches broadcast live on ESPN networks, bringing the excitement of beach volleyball to a national audience. Â
Looking ahead, Gulf Shores is set to host the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships from 2027 through 2031, ensuring its place at the forefront of collegiate beach volleyball for years to come . This commitment underscores the city’s dedication to the sport and its athletes.
