William Carey’s head baseball coach, Bobby Halford, has etched his name into Mississippi sports history by becoming the state’s all-time winningest college baseball coach. Halford achieved this milestone with his 1,374th career victory on Thursday May 1, 2025, when the Crusaders defeated Blue Mountain Christian 8–4 in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament in Jackson, TN
This landmark win propelled Halford past legendary Mississippi State coach Ron Polk, who amassed 1,373 wins during his storied career. Polk, often referred to as the “Godfather of SEC baseball,” graciously acknowledged Halford’s achievement, stating, “I’m proud of you. I’m happy for you. You’ve done a great job at William Carey. Continued success, and I hope you coach for another 25 years.”

Halford’s coaching journey at William Carey began in 1986. Over the past four decades, he has led the Crusaders to an impressive 1,374–811 record, boasting a .629 winning percentage. Under his leadership, the team has secured 19 conference championships, including the 2025 SSAC regular-season title, and made 16 appearances in the NAIA national tournament. His accolades include 13 conference and regional Coach of the Year awards, a national Coach of the Year honor in 2021, and four NAIA World Series appearances, including the most recent in 2023.
Beyond team achievements, Halford has been instrumental in developing talent, with over 50 of his players advancing to professional baseball careers. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the William Carey Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. He was also inducted into the NAIA Sports Hall of Fame last year as well.
Reflecting on his record-breaking win, Halford expressed gratitude, saying, “It’s great for our program and our university. I’ve been very blessed to be able to do this all of these years, and I owe my family a big thank you for all of their support.”
As the Crusaders continue their postseason journey, Halford’s legacy serves as an inspiration, highlighting the impact of dedication, leadership, and a passion for the game.
